Google News: Friend or Foe for Local News Services?
Written by Cooper Rusconi on October 22, 2011 – 6:46 amGoogle has long been a favorite scapegoat of the troubled news industry. Media mogul Rupert Murdoch famously accused the search titan of stealing from media outlets by drawing users to its aggregation service, Google News, and away from those sites’ home pages. New sites often dismiss Google’s claims that it helps them by driving traffic to their articles.
Now, early results from Microsoft Research New England suggest that news aggregators like Google News increase visits to local news sites—providing they highlight local news stories. The issue is particularly important at a time when many newspapers are trying to end the practice of giving away news for free.
Like it or not, aggregators play a significant role. A

HP gets back on the Sandy Bridge train with updated dv6t, dv7t, Envy, spruces up G-series too
Written by Cooper Rusconi on October 16, 2011 – 2:23 amHP has just revamped their notebook PC lineup in a big way, getting the latest (and now 100% error free) Sandy Bridge processors into several of their best laptops. The dv6t Select Edition, dv6t quad, dv7t quad and new Envy 17 laptops now feature USB 3.0 ports and CoolSense technology as well as the processor bump, but they’re also the beneficiaries of more stylish redesigns too if the hardware’s not enough for you. We found a great roundup over at LogicBUY, and it looks like the dv6t quad/SE and dv7t quad all come with pretty big coupons right now (while they last), with a smaller one available on the Envy 17.
On the other side of the equation, HP has spent some time updating their g-series laptops, cutting off a number and leaving us with the freshly minted g4, g6 and g7 models. Color options abound for these notebooks, and while there’s no Sandy Bridge to be found here, the price is certainly right. LogicBUY has some coupons on those too to make them even more affordable.
- Get the HP Envy 17 starting at just $1249.99 after $50 coupon, or nab the HP Envy 17 3D capable laptop for $1549.99 after $50 coupon
- Get the HP dv7t quad starting at just $924.99 after $325 coupon, plus FREE Blu-ray, 6GB RAM and 750GB Hard Drive

Fujitsu Stylistic Q550
Written by Cooper Rusconi on September 26, 2011 – 7:01 pmBuying a Windows tablet before Windows 8 comes out? It’s not a bad idea if you want the Windows 7 tablet features like running PC apps and handwriting recognition now and Fujitsu’s Stylistic Q550 combines the power of Windows with a touch screen and stylus – and the new Oak Trail Atom CPU which delivers decent battery life. That comes at a price, and a price tag, that won’t suit everyone, including Windows tablet fans.
Design
The Q550 looks like a business machine with a few concessions to modern styling. The angled edges make it look thinner and the rounded corners are comfortable to hold. But the matte black plastic doesn’t match the matte black glass bezel or the white grey back with reflective logo.
