Phone Calls Via Facebook Will Be Possible Soon
Written by Emma McAlpine on July 10, 2011 – 6:44 amFacebook announced its tie up with Skype according to which, FB users will be able to have video chats with their friends. This came as Google recently showed off the Hangouts feature on the Google+ social network. However, FB doesn’t want to stop at just that. The social networking giant will make more out of its tie up with Skype by launching voice calling (to phones) in the near future. Apparently, users will be able to make voice calls using the VoIP provider’s services through FB. The Consumer Head of Skype, Neil Stevens has confirmed this, and therefore it is only a matter of time till FB launches this handy service as well. Google Voice also offers similar functionality with a dedicated application for the Android platform and a regular browser version with which users can make phone calls across the globe at fair prices. Nevertheless, with Skype’s expertise, we think FB could be on to something good here.
You might be wondering how this would work. Well, when a user finds his \ her friend(s) online, he \ she can make calls directly to their cellphones if their number is registered on FB. This is basically like starting off a regular chat, but with the added advantage of voice. However, this will not be free and will cost users a certain fee (in terms of Skype or FB credit). It is too early to say if this service will compete with the likes of Google Voice, but FB surely has its priorities set. It is also being mentioned that users will be able to make calls from FB to Skype and vice versa. This seems like a very bold and interesting move by FB. Though this service doesn’t bring anything new to the table, users of FB will be certainly be pleased to start using it. There is no mention of a date for the launch of this particular service, but reports suggest that it shouldn’t take long from now.
