Praxis Care gets slapped wrist from ICO
Written by Eliza Hardacre on January 17, 2012 – 6:01 amHealth provider Praxis Care has been found in breach of the Data Protection Act by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) after losing an unencrypted memory stick.
The stick containing personal information of 107 Isle of Man residents and 53 individuals from Northern Ireland was lost on the Isle of Man in August 2011. Some of the information related to individuals’ care and mental health. The stick has not been recovered, but Praxis has informed all affected individuals.
Praxis had a joint action taken against it by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and the Office of the Data Protection Supervisor (ODPS) for the Isle of Man.

Greentech Media broke the Nest thermostat story in June, much to the chagrin of the once-stealthy company and its lawyers.
Nest builds thermostats — beautiful, smart and expensive thermostats. Nest CEO Tony Fadell, an ex-Apple alum, thought something better could be done in the thermostat space and users could have a better experience than that provided by the “Honeywell Round.”
Nest officially unveiled its product in a tightly controlled manner, as befits its Apple roots, in October.

More Picture-Takers Are Phoning It In

No big surprises here. The single-purpose camera is in decline, the smartphone camera on the rise.
New research from NPD finds that smartphones are now responsible for more than a quarter of the photos and videos people take in the U.S. About 27 percent of photographs taken in 2011 were captured by smartphones, up from 17 percent last year. Meanwhile, about 44 percent were taken with single-purpose cameras. Thats down from 52 percent in 2010. Standard cellphones, camcorders, webcams and tablets account for the remainder.
So, a significant decline, and one indicative of a trend thats been emerging for years now: The smartphone as good enough camera.

Gigabyte has added a new Tablet PC to its Booktop line, the 11.6-inch T1132. It features a convertible design and it also comes with the optional rotating docking station. The new T1132 Tablet PC has the ability to let you convert it into a desktop PC, it is equipped with a 11.6-inch capacitive multitouch display with LED backlight and a 1366768 resolution.
Under the hood, there is an Intel Core i5-2467M processor, an integrated HD 3000 graphics card or an optional 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT520M dedicated graphics card with NVIDIA Optimus Technology, and it comes with either 2GB or 4GB of RAM.
